A stranger at a bus stop got me to stop interrupting people in arguments

I used to jump in mid-sentence whenever someone was explaining their side, thinking it made me sound sharp. Last month in Portland, a guy waiting for the 44 line told me, 'You're not listening, you're just reloading,' and he walked off before the bus came. Now I catch myself holding my tongue, but has anyone else found a way to actually quiet that urge without looking like you're zoning out?

Every phone conversation I hear these days is two people reloading, not listening.
