A chat with my barber made me rethink how I talk to my dad
For years, I'd call my dad every Sunday and just give him a basic update on my week, like a report. Then, about eight months ago, my barber asked me a simple question while cutting my hair: 'What's the best thing your dad ever taught you, not with words but just by being him?' I had to think hard. That night, I called my dad and asked him about his first car, a 1972 Chevy truck. He talked for twenty minutes, and I just listened. Now our calls are full of stories, not just facts. Has anyone else had a simple question from someone change how you connect with family?

That part about stories instead of facts really hit home.

That "stories instead of facts" shift is like asking for a movie instead of a weather report.

Remember that big hurricane map last year showing every possible path. The raw data was useless for most people trying to decide if they should leave. A local news story about one family boarding up their house gave way more useful facts about the real risk and timing. Sometimes the narrative is the only thing that makes the data matter.
