The foreman in Tulsa made us stop using the laser level for a week, and it fixed our layout problems
We were roughing in a 14,000 sq ft retail shell off I-44 in Tulsa last month. Kept fighting the same corner being out of square by about 3/8 inch. Chalked it up to bad framing until the foreman pulled our rotary laser off the job for a full week. Said we had to set every corner with a plumb bob and string line first, then check with the laser after.
The laser had been out of calibration for who knows how long. We were building to a bad reference the entire time. Sent it in, they said it was off by 0.2 degrees on the horizontal. Sounds tiny until you stretch it across 200 feet.
Now we check the laser against a known string line every Monday morning before it goes on the wall. Takes 5 minutes. Saved us a redo on the storefront glass that would have run about $8k.
Anyone else have a tool that was quietly lying to them for months before someone caught it?
