Just saw a sidewalk repair in Portland with a weird finish pattern

They were patching a section near Powell's Books and the finisher used a magnesium float, but then went over it with a broom at a 45 degree angle instead of straight across. It left these diamond-shaped ridges that actually looked pretty good for traction. Has anyone else tried that angle for a broom finish, or is it just a Portland thing?

Yeah, I did a broom finish at an angle on my own walkway last fall. It gives way better grip in the rain than a straight pull.

Angle makes sense for grip. I did a crosshatch pattern on my patio and it looks cool but collects leaves like crazy.
