Unpopular opinion: that click of death on a client's drive in Tucson last month made me change my whole intake process
I plugged a customer's external drive into my bench machine to do a quick backup before a wipe and it started clicking about 5 seconds in. Now I make every client sign off before I touch their data, and I ask if it's their only copy first. Anyone else had a drive die right on their bench and eat the blame for it?
Paperwork saved my butt on this exact thing last year. Now I hand clients a one page sheet that says "if this drive is your only copy, stop and tell me now" and they initial it before I even plug anything in. Had a guy bring in a dying Seagate with his only wedding photos, and because he signed that sheet we both knew the deal going in. I still cloned it with ddrescue and got most of it back, but if it had died mid clone there was no finger pointing. The sheet takes two minutes and kills the whole "you broke it" fight before it starts. Also helps to snap a photo of the drive and its serial before touching it, saves a lot of grief.
