Had a chat with a guy who still builds PCs with spinning hard drives

I was swapping out a power supply for a guy at my shop yesterday and he starts telling me about his home server setup. Dude is running five 2TB mechanical drives in RAID 5 because he says he doesn't trust SSDs for long term storage. I laughed at first but then he pulled up a spreadsheet showing three different SSD failures he had over the last 8 years compared to zero from his old WD Reds. Got me wondering if I've been too quick to write off HDDs for certain builds. Anyone else run into arguments about old vs new storage that actually made you second guess?

Five mechanical drives for a spreadsheet is some real dedication.

Damn @quinna89, are you running a crypto mining operation or just really committed to that pivot table?

Wait @quinna89, are we really judging when I run mine off a USB hub?
