Read something about this, like the best teachers show you how to fish instead of just giving you one. Did the kid really learn, or just copy what you did?

Honestly, building it for him kinda misses the point. The kid didn't learn anything if you just guided his hands. Real learning is frying a RAM stick because you didn't ground yourself, or spending three hours figuring out why the PC won't post. That struggle is what sticks. Now he just knows how to follow orders, not solve problems. Next time something breaks, he'll be right back at your door instead of cracking open a manual.
