Switched to a full face mask for a wreck dive and my comms went haywire
Did a harbor job off Norfolk last month and swapped my standard band mask for a full face unit to test it out on an old tugboat wreck. Figured it would be a simple comms check before we started cutting. About 15 minutes in the surface started saying I was breaking up, real staticky, and they could barely hear my recalls. I kept adjusting the mic position and tapping the housing, nothing helped. Turns out the seal was letting a tiny leak in near the ear cups and it was messing with the voice activation. Soon as I surfaced and reseated the whole thing, worked fine. We lost maybe 40 minutes of bottom time on that one. Has anyone else had full face masks act up like that on deeper or colder water, or was it just a bad seat on mine?
Seat the mask right and dry and that static goes away, every time. Colder water makes the silicone stiffen up so it never seals quite like it did on the surface, and one little channel near the ear cup will kill your voice activation. Mine did the same thing on a job in 42 degree water until I started warming the skirt in my hands before the dive. Lost way more than 40 minutes learning that lesson. Check the seat at depth too, not just on deck.
