Changed my tune on those Kirby Morgan band masks after a cold water job in Alaska

I used to think the BandMask 28 was just overpriced plastic, swore by my old AGA full face. Then last month up in Dutch Harbor, water temp was 38 degrees and my AGA kept freezing the exhalation valve. Borrowed a buddy's Kirby Morgan 28 for a dive, and that thing didn't ice up once. Has anyone else had old gear fail on them in extreme temps?

Watched a drysuit zip fail on a guy at 60 feet once. That was a fun ride up.

What specific depth were you running when the AGA froze up on you? I've heard those exhalation valves are notorious for icing when you're doing deco stops in sub-40 degree water because the cold air hitting the warm moist exhaled breath creates that instant freeze. Did you try any of those aftermarket defrost kits they sell for the AGA before switching over, or was it just straight to borrowing the KM28?

Icing hit at 22 feet on the first deco stop, not the valve.
