A tender on the Sabine Pass job swore my bailout bottle valve was fine, and I still hear it when I suit up
About 6 years back I was working a pipeline job outside Sabine Pass and the tender handed me my bailout bottle after a visual check. I asked if the valve had been cracked and he looked me dead in the eye and said "it's good, I checked it myself." I trusted him because we had done 5 or 6 dives together that month and he had never steered me wrong. Fifteen minutes into the dive I went to test the valve and it was sticky as hell, took two hands to get it moving. I surfaced, walked out, and he just shrugged and said the shop must have swapped tanks on him. Nothing bad happened that day, but I think about it on every single pre dive check now. Anybody got a system for double checking your own life support gear when the deck is moving and everyone is rushing you?
Man, that would mess with my head too. I've had somebody swear up and down they checked something and it turned out they didn't, and it's hard to shake that feeling after. Good on you for trusting your gut and surfacing when something felt off.
