Wrote off my LCS pull list as a waste of money until a Wednesday in March flipped me
I had been telling my buddy Dave for months that keeping a pull list at my comic shop in Sacramento was pointless since I could just grab trades online for half the price. Then on a Wednesday in March I walked in to grab one floppy and the owner Maria slid a stack across the counter that she had been holding for me anyway. Someone had traded in a full run of a book I loved as a kid, and she set it aside because she remembered me mentioning it eight months earlier. That single stack was worth more to me than every discount I ever got online. I sat in my car in the parking lot and read the first issue right there. Dave was right and I was wrong. Now I stop by every Wednesday even if my box is empty, just to talk to people who actually read this stuff. Anyone else have a shop owner who remembers what you like better than you do?
The part about sitting in your car in the parking lot reading issue one right there hits me, because that's the thing an online order can never give you. There's a whole social layer to shops that people never talk about when they crunch the numbers on floppies vs trades. Your pull list isn't really a buying plan, it's a record of who you are as a reader, and Maria was basically keeping your file in her head. That's why the numbers never tell the full story, because you can't put a discount on someone remembering you.
