Overheard a guy at my LCS say he stores his floppies in binders

I was picking up my pull list and this older collector was telling the owner he keeps all his single issues in three-ring binders with poly sleeves. He said he's got 40 years of books that way and none have any spine roll or cover damage. Has anyone here tried that method or is it a recipe for disaster long term?

Binders work great if you're careful with the poly sleeves and don't overstuff them like a madman. The key is keeping the books flat and not cramming too many per ring, otherwise you'll get that dreaded ring indent. My buddy has been doing it for 15 years with no issues, so it's not a disaster if you're smart about it.

Did that friend ever have a ring pop off and stab a book? My buddy had one snap shut on a $40 slab once and it put a nice little dent in the corner. Ever since then he's been paranoid about it.

Binders are fine if you don't overload them, but those ring dents are real. I had a three ring binder with some cheaper poly sleeves and one of the rings pressed right through the cover of a $30 book. The ring wasn't even that tight, the plastic just gave way. Now I only use D ring binders if I go that route, they spread the pressure out way better than standard round rings.
