Had to choose between a mint Amazing Fantasy 15 reprint or a beat-up first print of Hulk 181 for my nephew's first comic.

I went with the beat-up Hulk 181 because he loves Wolverine, and seeing him actually read it and ask a million questions was way better than having a perfect book sit on a shelf.

Totally agree about the beat-up book being better. My cousin got a perfect copy of something for his kid and the poor thing was scared to even touch it. Comics are meant to be read, not treated like glass. You made the right call getting the one he actually wanted to hold and look at. That experience is way more important than condition.

Yeah I used to be all about keeping things mint, but seeing a kid actually enjoy a worn out book changed my mind. The whole point is to get lost in the story, not worry about making a crease. That stuffy perfect copy just ends up sitting on a shelf.

Exactly, and @miller.rowan is right about that fear ruining the fun.

That kid's joy proves @taylorshah is right, a beat-up book you read beats a mint one you're scared to touch.
