Serious question, I called BS on my cousin's $200 thermal camera until I found a $4,100 leak behind my wall
My cousin kept telling me those cheap thermal cameras actually work and I told him he was wasting money on a gadget. Then last month I noticed a warm spot on my ceiling in the hallway near my water heater, so I borrowed his and it showed a wet patch the size of a dinner plate. A plumber cut in and found a slow leak that had been soaking the drywall for who knows how long, and he told me it would have been a $4,100 repair if I had waited for the ceiling to cave in. Has anyone else bought one of these and actually caught something before it turned into a disaster?
Did you have any clue how much water was actually sitting up there before you borrowed it? I was the same way as you at first, figured those cheap cameras were just a gimmick for people who like gadgets. A guy at work kept going on about his and I basically rolled my eyes every time. Then he lent it to me over a weekend and I found a cold spot on my bedroom wall that turned out to be a gap letting in outside air, which explained why that room was always freezing in winter. Not as dramatic as a $4,100 leak, but it saved me from ripping out drywall later chasing the wrong problem. Now I keep one in the junk drawer and check the house every few months, takes like five minutes. Funny how you can be totally wrong about something so cheap.
