Update: My family dinner turned into a coffee roast critique session.
I brought a bag of my favorite local beans to share, and my uncle spent the whole meal comparing it to his fancy home roast. Now I'm never bringing coffee to a family event again.

Tbh, when you said it feels like a competition, that really hit home. Last Thanksgiving I brought my favorite apple pie and my cousin showed up with her "healthy" version to compare. Honestly, she would not stop going on about her crust having less sugar and more whole grains. It completely killed the fun of just sharing something nice with everyone. I got so frustrated because it turned a kind gesture into some kind of bake-off. Now I just bring store-bought rolls to avoid any drama.

But honestly, sometimes a little competition makes things more fun. It pushes you to find better beans or try a new recipe. If your uncle roasts his own, maybe he was just excited to talk about it. @the_ray, I get why it feels like a contest, but maybe he saw it as sharing a hobby. Bringing store bought stuff just to avoid talk seems like giving up.
