Overheard a barista warning about cheap scales, now I get it

I was sitting in a shop last Friday and heard the head barista tell a new hire that their $12 scale drifts after about 40 uses, which is why shots were pulling all over the place. He said they tested three cheap models side by side and every one read 2 to 3 grams off by the third week. That got me thinking about my own setup at home, I've been blaming my grinder for sour shots when it might be my scale all along. Anyone else had a budget scale go inconsistent on them without realizing it?
