Found out my cafe composts their coffee grounds now

I mean, it's a neat way to cut down waste, maybe it's just me.

Do they give the grounds to customers for gardens too? That would be even better.

But giving grounds to gardens isn't always better. Coffee grounds can make soil too acidic. Some plants really suffer, like blueberries actually need that acid but most don't. It can attract pests like fruit flies. I've tried it and my plants yellowed. Just tossing them in compost is simpler.

Have you seen how messy used coffee grounds are? That's just asking for bugs and spills in the parking lot. Most people would probably just toss them anyway.

Actually, coffee grounds aren't that acidic once they're used. The brewing takes most of the acid out. They're pretty close to neutral, so they won't hurt most garden soil. The bigger issue is just using too much at once, which can make a crust. A thin layer mixed into compost works great.
