Am I the only one who thought you needed a college degree to code until I saw the Stack Overflow survey showing 65% of pros are self-taught?

Found that stat in their 2022 developer survey and it completely changed my plan, so has anyone else here started learning without going back to school?

Remember when everyone thought you needed a degree for that?

Was it ever that big of a deal, like lewis.terry's cousin?

Wondering what changed to make people see it differently. Was it just the internet giving everyone a platform, or did the jobs themselves get easier to learn? Feels like a mix of both, honestly. Companies got tired of paying for degrees that didn't actually teach the specific skill they needed. Now they just want to see you can do the work, no matter how you learned it.

Wait, people actually believed that? My cousin got a web design job in 2010 with a portfolio he built messing around on Neopets. Meanwhile, my buddy with a fancy computer science degree spent two years fixing printer jams at a copy shop. The whole system was a scam.
