Showerthought: I was using a 3/8 end mill for finishing passes on aluminum for two years...

A guy from a shop in Dayton was watching me run a part and just said, 'You know a 1/2 inch gives you less chatter there, right?' I swapped it in and the finish was way smoother, no more that weird harmonic ring. How many other little 'that's just how I do it' habits are we all hanging onto?

That old coolant trick saved my bacon on a titanium job once.

Remember the old guy who taught me to always run coolant through the spindle for aluminum. I thought it was just about heat, but he said it's mostly to stop chips from re-welding to the tool. Changed my whole approach to clearing chips. Sometimes the reason for a habit gets lost, and you just keep doing the thing without knowing why it works.

But what if the old guy was wrong about the main reason? Maybe heat control is actually more important for tool life than chip welding. Sometimes we hold onto these shop stories without ever testing them ourselves.
