Thought my recycling was solid until a guy at the Portland transfer station pointed at my bin
Honestly I felt pretty good about my setup until last month when a worker at the Portland transfer station flagged my bin and asked why I was bagging everything. I had been putting all my recycling in plastic bags for like 2 years, thinking it kept things tidy. Turns out the bags jam the sorting machines and a lot of it just goes to landfill. Ngl that one stung. Anyone else learn a basic recycling habit was actually hurting things?
I did the exact same thing for years and felt so dumb when I found out the bags just get ripped open or tossed. What got me was learning that even the "recyclable" bags are a problem at the plant, they just gum up the belts and slow everything down. Now I dump everything loose into the bin and it feels weird but apparently that's the right move.
