Rant: I parked my 1966 Mustang on a dirt floor for 8 months and the frame paid for it
Pulled the cover off my 1966 Mustang in the garage last Saturday and found rust creeping along the rear frame rail, all because I let it sit on bare dirt since October. My neighbor Dale, who has kept a Model A for 30 years, took one look and said the ground pulls moisture straight up into the metal. I threw down 6 mil plastic and a layer of gravel the next day, but the damage was already there. Anyone else figure out the hard way that you need a vapor barrier under these old cars?
Same thing happens with just about everything that sits on dirt, not just cars. I've watched guys stack firewood right on the ground and lose the bottom row every time, and my grandpa's tools in the shed got pitted to hell because the floor was plain dirt. Water doesn't care what it's touching, it just wicks up and finds a way in. Plastic and gravel is the right fix but you gotta do it before, not after. Dale sounds like the kind of neighbor worth keeping around. Next time you pull that cover off, check the trunk floor and the cowl too, those spots hide rust longer than the frame does.
