The 12 years I lived in this city before noticing the train tracks go silent at 3:17 AM every single night

Last Tuesday I couldn't sleep and caught the lack of that rumbling sound, then I realized I'd been tuning out my whole neighborhood's heartbeat this whole time. Has anyone else suddenly clocked some weird background noise or quiet spot in their town that makes it feel totally different?

Tuning out the train noise is like forgetting your own heart beats until someone points it out.

It's wild how that works, @the_taylor. I've noticed the same thing with the hum of a refrigerator or the buzz of a fluorescent light at work. You only really hear it when it stops or when someone calls it out, and then suddenly it's all you can focus on for the next ten minutes. It makes me think about all the stuff we just accept as background noise in our lives, like the way a neighbor always mows their lawn on Saturday morning or the specific creak of a floorboard in your hallway. We filter out so much of our own everyday reality until something shakes it up and reminds us it was there the whole time.
