A guy outside a Detroit Coney Island told me the whole city sits in his chest, and I still think about it
I was waiting for a chili dog at 2am on Michigan Ave last week and this older dude in a Tigers cap just started talking to me like we knew each other. He said he has lived in 6 different neighborhoods here and every one of them, quote, lives in his chest. He meant it in a good way but also like a heavy way, if that makes sense, because he said it while staring at the empty street. I eat there like once a week and I never really thought about how a place can just sit inside you like that until he said it. Now every time I pass that corner I hear his voice. Does anyone else have a spot in their city that does that to them?
There's a bench by the river where my dad and I used to get ice cream, and now every time I walk past it I feel him sitting right there next to me. Places hold stuff for us, that guy knew what he was talking about.
