The dishwasher at my restaurant asked why I plate so fast, and his 4 word answer changed how I see my whole job
He said "you eat first, right?" and suddenly I got it, the food is real to him in a way it never was to me when I'm slinging 200 covers a night. Anyone else have a coworker say something small that flipped a switch?
Oh wow, yes! I used to work at a pizza place and one of the guys in the back who did prep said something like "the tomatoes don't care how fast you go" and it stuck with me forever. I was always rushing to get through the pile of onions and peppers so I could move on, but he treated each one like it mattered. It really made me slow down and actually look at what I was doing instead of just checking boxes. Funny how the people doing the "small" jobs are sometimes the ones who see the whole thing clearest.
