Hot take: I used to think all compost bins were the same until I switched from a tumbler to a simple pile.

For years I used a plastic tumbler in my backyard, thinking it was the neat and fast way to go. After reading a book from the library, I built a basic three-bin wood pile system instead. The difference in soil quality after just one season was huge, way richer and full of worms. Has anyone else found that a simple setup works better than a fancy gadget?

My neighbor gave me her old tumbler last spring and I had the same experience. The compost never really broke down right and it was a pain to turn. Switching to an open pile made everything so much easier and the results were way better.

Tumblers can work great for a lot of people, they just need a specific mix of greens and browns. My tumbler makes fantastic compost because I'm careful with the balance. It's more about the recipe than the container itself.

Read something similar in a gardening blog last month.
