Balcony herbs seemed safe until a squirrel feast proved me wrong

Figured the railings were enough protection. Came out to chewed stems and dirt everywhere. What's your best trick for keeping animals away?

Man, that reminds me of the ants that invaded my kitchen last summer. They found some tiny crack near the window and just kept coming for days. I felt like I was in some weird standoff, wiping down the counters every hour. It got to the point where I was researching ant hills in the yard, ready to declare full war. They just don't give up, do they?

My friend Mark battled ants in his apartment all summer! They were coming through the electrical outlets, which freaked him out. He laid down bait traps, but the ants just carried the poison back to their nest somewhere in the walls. @jason_lewis3, your comment about them being relentless is so true. Mark said he felt like he was living in a nature documentary. He had to seal every crack with caulk before they finally stopped.
