Pulled up 40 year old tack strip in a house near Dayton and the staple trick saved me 2 hours
Did a tear out last Tuesday in an old house near Dayton, the tack strip was so dry it kept snapping instead of lifting. I tried my usual flat bar and pry bar and was getting nowhere, just dust and busted wood. Then the homeowner's handyman told me to run a putty knife under the strip first to pop the staples loose, then the bar lifts it in one piece. Got the whole living room and hall done in 2 hours instead of the 4 I planned for. Anybody else use a putty knife for tear out or do you have a better way?
The putty knife trick works for sure but it doesn't pop the staples loose. It just slides under the strip and cuts the staples off at the top. Same end result, strip lifts clean, but the staple legs stay stuck in the floor. That's why you still gotta go back over it with pliers or a scraper before you lay new pad. Still a solid move on that old dry stuff though.
