Serious question, tried a $9 foam brush on water based poly and it beat my $28 badger hair brush
Was finishing a set of oak cabinet doors last month in my garage here in Reno and grabbed a cheap 2 inch foam brush because my good brush was drying from the last coat. The foam laid down a smoother finish with zero brush marks and I barely had to tip it off, which never happens with the expensive one on this stuff. Starting to think I have been paying for the wrong thing this entire time. Anyone else get better results from the cheap option or did I just get lucky with this one batch of poly?
Used to be the guy who swore by the $30 brush and thought foam was for amateurs. Then I tried one on a small trim job and got the same result you did, no marks, no tipping, way less hassle. Now the good brush mostly sits in the drawer unless I'm doing stain.
