Can we talk about that leveling battle on a hardwood floor?

I spent 9 hours last Friday trying to get a 40 year old subfloor flat enough for engineered hardwood in a 12x14 room. Ended up using three different bags of self-leveler and still had one corner that was off by a quarter inch. How long did your last floor leveling job actually take compared to what you estimated?

Oh man, you are absolutely right about that. Quarter inch is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. I remember helping a buddy with a house from the 1920s and there was a dip in the living room that was almost three inches from one side to the other. We ended up having to pour self-leveler in stages, letting each layer cure for a full day before we could check it again. That three day weekend turned into a whole week of just trying to get the floor flat enough so the hardwood wouldn't crack or feel spongy underfoot.

Honestly, "that three day weekend turned into a whole week" is basically the story of my life with home projects. I once estimated a floor leveling job would take a single Saturday and ended up using so much self-leveler I think I single-handedly kept the company in business. I had this one spot that kept sagging no matter what I did, so after the fifth pour I just put a throw rug over it and told myself it was "character." Ngl, by the end I was just praying the floor would hold my weight without cracking.

Quarter inch is nothing, wait til you fight a 2 inch slope like my last house had.
