Unpopular opinion: J.K. Rowling got canceled too hard for her trans views

I was talking to my friend Sarah last week at a coffee shop, and she said Rowling's books helped her through a tough childhood, so she can't just throw them away, and now I'm wondering if canceling someone means we have to ditch everything they ever made, what do you think?

lol yeah but I gotta push back on that. Sarah's feelings are valid but they don't mean Rowling gets a free pass from criticism. Separating the art from the artist is a privilege that mostly benefits people who aren't hurt by her public statements. I mean, if you're a trans kid who grew up reading those books and now sees the author actively funding groups that make your life harder, it's not so easy to just "enjoy the memories." The whole cancel culture thing gets blown out of proportion but in this case the pushback is about real harm, not just hurt feelings. You can still love the books while admitting Rowling's stance is damaging and deserves the backlash she's getting. It's not about throwing everything away, it's about holding someone accountable when they use their platform to punch down.
