The $40 tarp that outperformed my $300 tent in a downpour

I bought a cheap blue tarp from a hardware store in Missoula as a backup ground cover. Last month a storm rolled in and my tent seam tape gave out. I flipped the tarp over the tent like a roof and stayed bone dry all night. Now I carry that tarp everywhere and my fancy tent stays home. Anyone else have a budget item that beat their pricey gear?

Hell yeah! Same thing happened to me in the Smokies. My rain fly ripped at 2 AM and I threw a $5 painter's tarp I had in the car over everything. Woke up dry as a bone while my buddy in his $400 tent was soaked. Now that tarp is folded up in my pack every single trip. I swear by the cheap stuff now. People overthink gear way too much. Sometimes a hunk of plastic is all you really need.

Hold on, are we really comparing a tarp to a tent like they do the same job?
