The $17 foam pad that solved my cold sleeping bag problem

Last fall I went camping near Asheville and woke up shivering even though my bag was rated for 20 degrees. I tried adding layers and a hot water bottle, but the cold kept coming up from the ground through my old air mattress. Then a guy at the campsite suggested putting a closed-cell foam pad underneath the air mattress. I grabbed a cheap one for $17 at a hardware store and tried it on my next trip. Has anyone else found that stacking pads works better than buying one expensive insulated mattress?

Thought the same thing for years, figured one good pad was enough and the ground temp was the real issue. Then I tried the cheap foam layer under my inflatable and the difference was night and day, no more cold spots on my hips. Now I always stack them, even on summer trips, since it costs less than upgrading and cuts down on any weird air mattress sag.
