Everyone loves the Jetboil but my $25 kettle on a PocketRocket boils faster at 9000 feet
Picked up a cheap GSI kettle and a PocketRocket 2 for a trip up to Guanella Pass last month instead of dropping $110 on a Jetboil Flash. Timed both setups side by side at camp: the kettle hit a rolling boil in 3 minutes 40 seconds, the Jetboil took almost 5. Maybe the Jetboil wins on wind, but for one person and a coffee habit the kettle plus canister costs less and packs smaller. Anyone else ditched an all in one stove after actually timing it?
Did you weigh the fuel use too? I used to be all in on the Jetboil and would have told you the kettle setup was junk without even trying it. Then a buddy made me time his cheap pot on a BRS at 10k feet and it boiled just as fast while using less gas, which I did not expect at all. The part that got me was packing. The Jetboil is one fat cylinder that fights everything else in my pack, while the kettle nests a canister, a lighter, and my coffee stuff inside it. I still grab the Jetboil in winter or when it is really blowing, but for a normal trip the cheap setup won and I felt kind of dumb for years of defending the other one.
