The old timer at the supply house in Macon handed me a compression tool and I waved him off, and I still feel dumb about it
Back around 2009 I was doing mostly apartment rough ins and I thought my crimp method was fast enough. This grey haired guy named Wendell who ran the counter kept pushing a compression tool on me, told me crimp fittings would fail on any line that saw real pressure over time, and I brushed him off because the tool cost $68 and I was broke. Fast forward five years and I got called back to redo a bunch of my own crimp work at a complex off Zebulon Road, water in walls and all. I bought the tool that day. Any of you still running crimp on anything, or did everyone switch over after that whole mess?
That exact thing happened to me except it was PEX crimp rings not the old copper crimp. Had a whole building at a complex on Eisenhower where the rings started weeping at the joints after about four years. Not a blowout, but enough slow seep that three units had soft sheetrock and one had mold behind the vanity. The hard part is you never find them all at once. You fix the ones you can see, then six months later another unit calls. I went to the clamp style after that and quit looking back. If you're still on crimp anywhere with pressure on it, at least go back and pressure test the runs you did years ago before somebody else finds them for you.
