Spent $80 on a Klein cable toner that found a break in 15 minutes after I'd been poking around for an hour.
It was under a floorboard in a 1920s house in Portland, and that little box paid for itself on that one job alone, so what's your go-to tool that seemed pricey but you'd never go without now?

Yeah, that "about to let go" feeling is the worst. I had a similar panic with a moisture meter in an old bathroom, thought the whole subfloor was toast. Turned out it was just one pipe fitting weeping.

Honestly, what took you so long to get one? I fought buying a good thermal camera for years because of the price. Finally grabbed a Flir one and found a hot spot in a panel that was about to let go, saved a whole rewire.

Remember when those cheap laser thermometers got popular? I bought one thinking it would do the same job. Pointed it at a wall outlet that felt warm, got a normal reading, almost called it a day. My buddy with a real camera came over and showed me the whole back of the outlet box glowing bright yellow. Makes you wonder how much we miss trying to save a buck, right?
