Rant: fought a brick wall in an old Baltimore rowhouse for 2 hours before I figured out the trick
Drilling through 100 year old brick for a drop was eating up my bits and getting me nowhere, until an old timer on the crew handed me a masonry bit and told me to stop pushing so hard and just let the drill do the work. Went from 20 minutes a hole to about 4, and I've been doing it that way ever since. What's your go to for drilling old brick, hammer drill or just a steady hand?
20 minutes a hole down to 4 is wild to me. I've watched guys lean into a hammer drill with their whole body weight like they're trying to push the bit through with sheer will, and all it does is burn up the tip and make that awful screeching sound. Had a guy on a job in Canton who snapped two bits in one afternoon because he wouldn't ease up. You'd think after 100 years that brick would be soft, but no, it's like concrete with an attitude. Letting the tool do the work feels wrong at first, like you're not trying hard enough, but the holes say otherwise.
