So I finally tried that 'freehand with a jigsaw' method for cutting curves on a cabinet door after my band saw belt snapped.

It took me 45 minutes of sanding to fix the wobbles, versus the 5 minutes it would have taken on the band saw, and now I'm just staring at this lumpy maple wondering if I should call the client and tell them their 'organic' door is ready.

Yeah, I used to think it was a legit shortcut too.

Saw a woodworker say freehand jigsaw cuts are just practice for the sander.

Man, I feel that pain in my soul. That's 40 minutes of your life you're never getting back, just breathing maple dust. @the_mary is right, it's just making work for your sander. I tried it once on a plywood template and the blade wandered so bad it looked like a toddler's scribble. Never again.
