Appreciation post: My whole shop changed after I finally bought a proper dust collector
For years I just used a shop vac hooked to my tools and thought it was fine. My shop in the garage was always coated in a fine layer of walnut or maple dust, no matter how much I swept. I finally spent about $800 on a real two-stage dust collector six months ago. The difference is night and day. I can actually see the floor now, and more importantly, I can breathe. My clothes don't come out looking like I've been in a flour fight. It took me a full weekend to set up the ducting, but it was worth every minute. Has anyone else put this off and then been shocked by how much better it is?

Seriously, what brand did you go with?

Oh, I didn't actually buy one yet. Just been looking at reviews.

What kind of reviews are you looking at? I got stuck reading them for months too. Everyone argues about specs and bag sizes forever. Finally just picked one that fit my space. The real game changer was sealing all the duct joints with that foil tape. Stopped the fine dust leaks completely. Made a bigger difference than the brand name on the unit.
