The ISP rep who kept calling my school's fiber line a 'party pipe'
I had to call our business provider last Tuesday because the WiFi in the front office kept dropping during state testing, and the rep on the phone spent ten minutes explaining our 500 Mbps fiber as a 'party pipe' where 'everyone's streaming their own playlist.' I asked what that actually meant for our 40 classroom Chromebooks, and he said, quote, 'the pipe don't care who's dancing, it just moves the music.' I finally got him to admit there was a loose connector in the demarc box outside, which took a tech about 15 minutes to fix for a $75 truck fee. Has anyone else had a provider rep talk to them like they're ordering a drink instead of running a network?
Did he ever actually explain what the pipe has to do with 40 Chromebooks hitting it at once, or did he just keep going with the music thing? I'm asking because there's a real difference between bandwidth and a bad connection, and it sounds like he was using the party talk to avoid saying "I don't know." A loose connector in the demarc box is a physical problem, not a traffic problem, so all that playlist stuff was just noise. Did the $75 truck fee get waived once they admitted it was their hardware that was broken?
