The $74 receipt from my cousin's wedding is why I finally track every dollar
Went to my cousin's wedding in Boise two weekends ago and realized I had zero clue what I actually spent the entire trip. Between the hotel, gas, a gift, and two dinners out, I just kept swiping my card and figured I would sort it out later. When I got home and added it up, the total came to $412 and I honestly could not tell you where $74 of that went. That night I downloaded a free budget app and started logging everything, even a $1.50 gas station coffee. Now I check my spending every Sunday morning with coffee instead of waiting until the end of the month to panic. How do you all handle travel spending, do you set a hard number before you go or just track as you go?
How do you keep from going crazy checking every little thing while you're supposed to be having fun on the trip? My wife has a hard number for trips and I have a "just swipe it and pray" system, and you can probably guess which one actually works. I tried the envelope thing once and blew through my food budget by day two because I forgot airports charge you like ten bucks for a sad sandwich. Tracking as you go is smart but I always forget until I'm home staring at a statement wondering who spent all my money. The Sunday morning check in is a solid idea though, it's way less painful than the end of month panic where you add everything up and want to cry.
