Why does nobody talk about how hostels can actually cost more than a cheap hotel?

I used to book hostels for every trip to save cash, like a 12 bed dorm in Berlin for 25 euros a night. After a trip to Prague where a private room at a basic hotel was 30 euros, I did the math. The hotel had free breakfast and no locker fee, which saved me 5 euros a day on food and 2 euros for a locker. Now I always check hotel prices first, especially for two people. Has anyone else found hotels cheaper in some cities?

Used to swear by hostels for the budget life. Had a wake up call in Lisbon last year. A bunk in a loud dorm was 28 euros. Found a small hotel room with a private bath for 32. Like sandra_bennett59 said, the math just hits different. Stopped assuming hostels are always the answer. Now I compare every single time.
