A sore back changed my mind on camp chairs

My old Boy Scout leader called it "the comfort to weight ratio." He carried a full size pillow on every trip, said the extra pound was worth eight hours of good sleep. That stuck with me. I'll cut weight on my stove or water filter, but I always pack my tiny foam sit pad. It weighs nothing and keeps my butt dry and off the cold ground. Where do you draw your own line for a little comfort?

Remembering that crazy hot week in July '09 at the county fairgrounds

Yeah, that reminds me of a story I heard about a roofer getting a cold Gatorade from a homeowner on a scorching day.

Why does nobody talk about how hostels can actually cost more than a cheap hotel?

Guess you paid extra for the privilege of hearing someone else snore.

Serious question, is a perfect weekly spread really the goal?

Melted crayon on paper has that weird waxy texture, like a fossil of a kid's afternoon. You see it in old birthday cards where the glitter glue dried into a crust, or in school projects with warped construction paper. Those little accidents trap a moment way better than a perfect photo. It's the messy stuff that ends up meaning something years later.

Spent an hour trying to get a smooth hollandaise before I realized my butter was too hot

Actually rushing is the only way to get it right, you just have to commit. Hot butter blends faster and the sauce sets up quicker on the line. Letting it cool down just adds another step when you're already in the weeds. If your emulsion breaks, a splash of cold water and a hard whisk fixes it faster than waiting for butter to cool.
