Talked to a flight attendant about her meal prep system and it blew my mind

Was chatting with a woman on the shuttle to the airport last weekend. Turns out she flies 4-5 times a week for work. She told me she packs all her own meals in a soft cooler bag, stuffs it under the seat, and saves like $60 per trip. Said she hasn't bought airport food in 2 years. I never even thought about bringing my own food on a plane, I always just grab a $12 sandwich. Anyone else do this or am I late to the party?

Wait, have you tried freezing a water bottle to take through security? That trick saved me so much cash on long flights. I just pack a sandwich with an apple and some almonds in my carry-on, and it keeps everything cold until I'm ready to eat. The trick is to keep the bag small and soft so it squishes under the seat without bothering your legs.

Is there really that much of a difference between spending a few bucks on water and carrying around a frozen bottle that starts dripping everywhere once it melts? I mean, I get saving money, but you are going to pay for the sandwich ingredients and the apple and the almonds anyway. Plus, you have to remember to freeze the bottle and keep it solid through security, which sounds like a whole extra step to my morning. And then you have to eat a sad, squished sandwich under a seat while trying to avoid crumbs on your pants. Seems like a lot of effort just to avoid paying airport prices for a bag of chips. But hey, if it works for you, more power to you.

Wait, you actually bring a squished sandwich on a plane, @violar35!?
