I thought those 'free walking tour' tips were a total scam

Everyone in Prague said to just do the 'free' tours and tip what you want. I was sure the guides would pressure you for cash and give a bad tour. My friend dragged me on one, and the guide, Tomas, was amazing for three full hours. He actually said 'pay me what you think it's worth at the end, even zero' and meant it. I gave him $20 and felt like a jerk for doubting it. Has anyone else had a surprisingly good experience with these?

Honestly, I used to feel the exact same way. Figured it was a cheap trick to guilt people. Then I took one in Berlin last fall. The guide was so into the history, you could tell she loved it. She gave a great tour and just said thanks at the end, no pressure. Totally changed how I see them now. I tipped way more than I planned because it was actually worth it.
