Unpopular take: Rice is actually terrible for budget meals if you live in the wrong place
I moved out to rural Montana last year and everybody talks about rice as the cheap staple. But a 5lb bag here costs $7.49 at the local grocery. My grandma back in Oregon pays like $3 for the same bag. People act like rice is universally cheap but it depends entirely on where you live. Saw a USDA report from June that showed rice prices vary by over 200% depending on region. Meanwhile potatoes are $2.49 for 10lbs here. Am I crazy for thinking potatoes are the real budget king depending on location?

My wife brought home some "artisan" organic black rice the other day. Pricetag said $9.99 for a tiny bag. I told her we better be getting gold flakes with it for that kind of money. She just rolled her eyes and said it's healthier. Pretty sure my wallet's health took a bigger hit than whatever that rice is supposed to fix. At this rate I'll be growing my own grains in the backyard out of spite.

Growing your own grains out of spite, now that's a plan I can get behind.
