Saw something at the new bulk store in Cedar Rapids that made me think

Everyone says buying in bulk is the best way to save on food, but the entry fee and huge package sizes at this place lock you into a big spend upfront. I saw a 25 pound bag of rice for $18, but that's a lot of money and space if you're just cooking for one. How do people with small kitchens or tight cash flow actually make bulk buying work?

My old roommate in college tried the bulk thing with a giant tub of oatmeal. It lived on top of the fridge for months because we had zero cabinet space. The real cost was when we moved out and found a whole weird, damp colony growing in the bottom third of it. We ended up throwing most of it away, which felt like setting money on fire. That experience taught me that saving money only works if you can actually use the stuff before it goes bad or takes over your kitchen.

Ever consider just buying a smaller container next time?

I mean, that's more about storage than bulk buying itself. You gotta keep stuff in airtight containers, especially in a damp kitchen.
