Had to choose between ground beef and lentils for chili night

I was staring down $4.99 a pound for ground beef versus $1.29 for a bag of lentils at the store last Tuesday... I grabbed the lentils and honestly the chili came out pretty decent, but my kid kept asking where the meat was. Has anyone else tried sneaking lentils into dishes to save money on groceries?

Hey @jana_jones, did you blend them up or just toss them in whole? I feel your pain on that kid factor, mine said the same thing about my lentil chili so I started mashing half the lentils up with a potato masher before adding them. It made the texture closer to ground meat and honestly nobody even noticed. Lentils really are a lifesaver when ground beef is up to five bucks a pound at my local store.

Did you grind up the lentils first or just toss them in whole? I've been experimenting with blending them into ground meat to stretch it further but not sure if it really saves that much in the end.
