Why does nobody talk about fixing a stubborn zipper on a tent fly?

I spent 45 minutes last Sunday fighting a zipper on my 3-season tent that kept catching fabric at the top curve. Everyone online says just use a pencil or soap, but that did nothing for the actual misalignment. I had to take the slider off with pliers, realign the teeth, and snap it back on while holding a flashlight in my teeth. Has anyone else found a faster fix that actually works, or am I the only one who ends up cussing at gear in the dark?

Ugh, that trick with the pencil never works on actual misalignment, I always end up doing surgery on mine too!
