My brother and I turned a basement leak into a fern nursery.

When our basement got a little wet, my brother had the idea to use the spot for ferns instead of just drying it out. We ordered some spores online and now we have a whole bunch of different ferns growing there. At first, our mom was not happy about the mess, but she started helping with the water spray. Now every week, we all look at the ferns together and see how they are doing. It brought us closer as a family, which was a nice surprise. I never thought I would care so much about plant stuff, but here I am. My dad even learned the names of all the ferns, which is pretty cool. It shows how a simple plant hobby can change family time.

Watch out for mold if it stays damp down there. Ferns love that environment though, you picked the right plant for a leaky spot.

What's the best way to handle mold in damp areas? It's a constant battle... @wells.zara is spot on about ferns thriving, but mold can hide behind them. I had a similar issue with a bathroom plant, and the mold grew on the walls. You need good air flow or a dehumidifier to keep it in check. Ferns might survive, but they won't stop the mold from spreading.

Love turning a problem into something positive. That mold risk is real though, gotta keep an eye on it. Still a cool way to bond over plants.

Starting with spores is hardcore, gotta respect that. It's like a slow-mo family project that actually stuck.
