That master binder's glue tip sounded wrong but it actually saved my project

An old-timer at the Philly guild told me to back off the PVA and use wheat paste on a 1900s ledger last Tuesday, I thought he was nuts, but the hinges laid flat for the first time in 3 attempts, has anyone else had luck with traditional paste on vintage cloth?

Wheat paste ain't glue, it's paste, and the old guy knew the difference.
